ABOUT STEVE

Steven M. Peterson, LCSW #23821 is a clinical social worker specializing in treating clients with co-existing mental health and substance abuse illnesses. He also works extensively with family members of alcoholics and addicts, and clients adjusting to divorce. He also works with grief, trauma, schizophrenia, anxiety and mood disorders. 

Steve has been in private practice for over 33 years, serving individuals, couples, families, and groups. He believes strongly in evidence-based practice for the treatment of co-occurring disorders and has been involved in several large research projects combining medications for alcohol craving with psychosocial treatments. 

Steve has worked at inpatient and outpatient treatment centers in Oregon, Wisconsin, and California. He was an ad hoc professor at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee for 10 years and served as the lead research therapist at the Center for Addiction and Behavioral Health Research in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently, Steve teaches in the Addiction Studies program and Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California. He teaches class in Motivational Interviewing, Relapse Prevention, Dual Disorders, Group Facilitation and Leadership, Ethics and assists with the Field Work class.

Steve’s empathetic and solution-oriented approach has helped thousands of clients. His therapeutic orientation is informed by Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and the Family Systems approach. Steve believes that treatment for craving management and relapse prevention is an important key to success with substance abuse clients.
